Csehétfalva / Cehețel, Transylvania
Step into Transylvanian Wildflowers Atelier, a sanctuary devoted to beauty, craftsmanship, and the quiet poetry of nature. Nestled in the heart of the countryside, the atelier invites you to slow down and reconnect with traditions that have been passed from one generation of women to the next. Here, time softens, hands become storytellers, and every thread carries a memory.
Spend a day fully immersed in the heritage craft of plant-dyeing and spinning — ancient arts that transform beautiful natural materials into objects of warmth and wonder. This is a time devoted to the feminine: to intuition, resilience, patience, creativity, and the gentle strength found in working with one’s hands.
Experience the quiet magic of transformation as plants surrender their hidden pigments to water and heat, slowly releasing shades of gold, blush, moss, and deep earth. Watch as raw wool absorbs these living colours, becoming vibrant yet soft, each hue shaped by the season and the soil from which it grew. No two dye baths are ever the same — each one a small miracle of nature and alchemy.
Feel the texture of wool, learn the art of carding, and sit at the spinning wheel where raw wool twists and strengthens into yarn beneath your fingers. The steady hum of the wheel becomes a meditation, a heartbeat that connects past and present. With every turn, you participate in a lineage of makers who understood the value of slowness and care.
Tentative program
09:00 – 09:30- Arrival, coffee, tea.
09:30 – 11:00 – Preparing the dye bath for 4 or 5 colours. The participants cut plant materials in small pieces, prepare the water and the dye pots. The yarn is placed in the dye bath. The dyeing takes about 2 hours, and it includes intermittent steering and monitoring temperatures. While dyeing the yarn, participants have the chance to talk and have some refreshments.
approx 13:30 – The dye bath is taken off the fire, and will cool during the following 3 hours.
approx 14:00 – Lunch break.
approx 15:00 – Theoretical teaching and learning about plant-dyeing. The participants also have the possibility to try out the spinning wheels.
approx 17:00 or 18:00 – After the dye bath is cooled off, the participants remove the yarn from the dye bath. This is a meticulous process as the plant materials need to be removed from the yarn. When this is done, the yarn is washed several times and hung up to drip.
approx 19:00 or 20:00 – Colour lottery: every participant keeps 2 skeins yarn (approx 100 g each skein), and the lottery will decide who will keep which colour 🍃.
This is more than a workshop; it is a day in the life of the atelier. A day shaped by sunlight and the scent of simmering dye pots, by shared stories and quiet concentration. A day to create, to reflect, and to belong — if only for a while — to a world where beauty is grown, gathered, and gently spun into being.
